Blind date with a book

Students will have a choice to participate this Friday in the Blind Date with a Book activity.  If they choose to participate, they will choose a book from the box to read over Christmas break.  They won't be able to open to see which book they chose until they get home from school Friday.  Make sure your child returns the book if they chose to do the activity.  Also, if they are enjoying their choice, feel free to snap a picture, send it in an email with what they like about it, and I will post it to the blog.  They can also write on kid blog about it.  Happy Holidays!!!

Updates!

This week is the last week of classes before the end of the second quarter and winter break.  We have some very fun activities for students planned, as well as finishing up curriculum for the quarter.

This week in curriculum:
In math we are completing our chapter on Perimeter and Area.  Students will be taking their quiz on Tuesday.  The study guide will come home tonight and be due in the morning.  We will review Wednesday and pick up with 3 dimensional shapes after winter break.

In English Language Arts, we are finishing up Author's Purpose and taking our quiz today.  Students will be asked to find the author's purpose of a short piece of writing and tell why they think it is the Author's Purpose.  We will begin learning about Figurative Language when we come back from the break.  In writing we are continuing to story tell our small moments to back up our bullet points for our personal essays.  When we come back from break, we will begin organizing, revising, and editing our drafts.  We will take our Spelling Test on Thursday this week instead of Friday.  Tic Tac Toes will be due on Thursday this week as well.

We are not switching for Science or Social Studies this week.

Friday is the end of quarter 2 and our Holiday Parties.  We will have our book project celebration during the morning on Friday.  At 1:15 we will have the reindeer relays in the gym.  Classroom parties begin at 1:45.  As a reminder, classroom games must remain in the classroom.  Parties end at 2:45.

Have a great week and a wonderful winter break!  Happy Holidays! Class resumes on Monday, January 6th.

Boss visits!

Updates!

I hope you all enjoyed our snow day Friday!  Only two more weeks of school before Christmas break!
This week we have early release/buddy day on Wednesday.  The visit with Santa has been rescheduled for this Friday night from 5-8.  The book fair is this week.  We will preview it this afternoon, and shop it later this week.  Feel free to send in money for your child to shop at their recess time, if you do not want them to wait until our class shopping day on Friday.

This week in curriculum:
In math we are going over the Unit 6 test, and beginning Unit 9, which covers Area, Perimeter, and 3 dimensional shapes.  Unit 6 tests will come home today.  We will cover area and perimeter before break, and 3 dimensional shapes after the break.

In English Language Arts, students are continuing to learn about Author's Purpose.  They are learning to look for the author's clues to determine if the piece was written to persuade, inform, or to entertain.  We will be taking a short quiz early next week.  In writing, students are learning to add personal stories and metaphors to their opinion essays.  Our spelling test is Thursday of next week.  I will be collecting all writer's notebooks on Friday for the last collection before break.  By the end of the week, A week will have 16 entries, B-week will have 12 entries, and C week will have 8.

Students will have a test in Science over Chapter 4 next Tuesday (12/10). Flashcards should have already come home for students to begin reviewing vocabulary.  The study guide is located on pages 187-190, INSIDE of the science textbook.  The science textbook may came home on Thursday for students who wish to study over the weekend.  All students should bring their books home on Monday to complete the study guides and study for Tuesday's test. Students may wish to tear these pages out of the books and carry them back and forth in their take-home folders instead, which is fine.

Concepts covered in Chapter 4 include:
  • Ecosystems
  • Producers, Consumers, Decomposers
  • Food Chains and Food Webs
  • How living things affect the environment
  • Fossils and types of fossils
In social studies, students are continuing to learn about early Missourians.
Have a great week!  Thank you for all the support with the Adopt-a-Family project!

12-5 Evening Strings concerts
12-6  SPTG Visit with Santa 5-8- Also, the book fair begins!  We will go to the library to preview it on Friday.

This week in curriculum:
In math, we are finishing up Chapter 19 by learning about geometric patterns.  We will have a review day on Tuesday and take our Unit 6 Test on Wednesday.  This will cover all of the material learned in our Geometry Unit so far.  Your child should know the types of polygons (quadrilaterals, triangles), types of angles and lines (acute, obtuse, straight, and right), and all about motion geometry (lines of symmetry, rotational symmetry, translations, reflections, rotations, congruent and similar figures).  Please look at the anchor charts posted previously on the blog.

In English Language Arts, we are learning about Author's Purpose.  This piggy backs off of making inferences.  They can remember this using the saying PIE.  The three reasons an author writes something are P- Persuade, I-inform, and E-entertain.  When your child is reading this week, ask them to tell you the author's purpose of their book.  In writing we are continuing to generate ideas for our opinion essays.  We will be working on choosing our topic and writing our thesis statements this week.  New spelling words come home today.  We will take our spelling test THURSDAY, December 19th in stead of Friday.  Spelling tic tac toes will be due Thursday as well. Book projects are due MONDAY, December 9th.  Make sure your child has finished reading their book this week, so they can complete the project portion by Monday.

In science, students are continuing to learn about ecosystems.

In social studies, students are continuing to learn about early Missourians.

As always, please let me know any questions or concerns you have.  I hope you all have a wonderful week!
